Today I’m on a sugar high because we’re In the Mix with Brown Butter Cookie Company! When sisters Traci and Christa started getting more attention for the cookies in their small Central Coast sandwich shop, they knew they were onto something. And that something just happens to be one of the most delectable, melt-in-your-mouth cookies you’ll ever try. I was first introduced to a brown butter sea salt cookie a few years ago from one of my best friends, Mara when she brought some back from a trip to the charming town of Cayucos. I was extremely impressed with the perfect sweet meets salty flavor and the addicting crumble in every bite. We were beyond ecstatic to find a charming coffee shop in LA that carried these precious bites of perfection and just had to take a trip to the Central Coast to see them made in person. Luckily Christa was nice enough to let Sugar and Charm beyond the counter for an up close and personal tour of their adorable bakery nestled on a storybook street right across from the ocean! Read our sweet (pun intended) interview with Christa below! Oh, how I highly recommend trying these little pieces of confectionary yumminess!!

What exactly is a Brown Butter Cookie aside from being addicting? Our Brown Butter Sea Salt is our version of a shortbread cookie. What makes it special is the brown butter which adds a nutty rich flavor that you would not find without that special ingredient. Also the pinch of sea salt on top balances out the sweetness and makes for a sweet and salty cookie.

How did Brown Butter Cookie Co get its start? Our Original cookie was sold in our gourmet shop for about a year and a half before we decided to close the deli and make cookies full time. During that year and a half, customers had such a passion for this little cookie that we simply could not ignore the fact that this cookie wanted to get out into the world!

What’s the best part about working with your sister? My sister and I are best friends, the best part about working with Traci is that we have the same vision and so much trust. We can trust the other person to make key decisions because we have the same big picture vision for our company.

What’s the worst part about working with your sister? The worst part about working with my sister is the fact that we can not take long vacations together, we have the support of great staff now in our 6th year but it seems too stressful for both of us to be away for any long periods of time. Someday!

Was there a lot of trial and error creating the perfect recipe? Sometimes we hit a new recipe out of the park on the first try! Other times it takes many attempts and input from our team to get it right. It’s very rewarding and fun either way. It’s so much fun creating new cookie flavors from whatever may be inspiring us at the time.

What’s your most popular flavor? Our Original Brown Butter Sea Salt cookie is and will always be our most popular cookie flavor. We enjoy creating new flavors and each new cookie has its own following but nothing compares to the popularity of the Original cookie. I think it is the simplicity of that cookie.

What’s it like living above a cookie shop?! Is it tempting to have access to cookies 24/7? I would be in trouble!! Living above the cookie shop has its pros and cons. I spend a lot of time in one space! When I have a craving…yes…I may sneak downstairs on occasion. It’s great when we have a dinner party, just pop down for after dinner Cocoa cookies…can’t beat that!

Thanks so much Christa and Traci! Can’t wait to head back to the central coast for another visit!

FYI Charmers!! Starting March 1st, all online orders will receive a FREE box of original cookies!! Trust me, you want that free box of cookies… they are divine!!
