Gold hammered mugs with a Woodford Reserve cocktail and purple flowers

We have always been fascinated by the Kentucky Derby, which dates back to 1875! It’s the longest running sports event in American history, making it truly iconic. It definitely conjures up visions of being outside on a beautiful spring day, sipping a bourbon cocktail at the Churchill Downs.

The Derby is nostalgic and since most of us can’t be there in person, we’re sharing some simple ideas and the best cocktail to celebrate and watch it at home.

Cranberry juice, lemonade, Woodford Reserve on a gold tray.

Kentucky Derby Cocktail

We love a themed cocktail and there’s no better bourbon to serve than the official sponsor of the Kentucky Derby, Woodford Reserve. The art of making bourbon first took place on site of the Woodford Reserve Distillery in 1812. This famous bourbon has a rich history, along with a perfectly-balanced flavor. The straight bourbon is made with more than 200 flavor notes from spices to fruit and floral notes.

This delicious cocktail is refreshing and simple to make. Using only three ingredients and no muddling, you can simply place the ingredients on a bar cart and guests can even make their own!

Lemon Slice

Then pour them over crushed ice in a stainless steel cup.

Serve with a lemon slice.

Woodford Reserve is also a great sipping bourbon. You can conduct a fun tasting at your party using tips from Woodford Reserve. Plus you can order a bottle on Drizly and have it delivered to your doorstep in time for the races.

Roses

Since the Kentucky Derby is known as the Run for the Roses, roses are a must! We used Lenten Roses to make a beautiful arrangement for the bar. They’re an early spring rose that are just stunning in shades of purple, pink and white!

Traditionally the Derby is associated with red roses but truly any type of rose will work. Purchase pink, white or red roses at your local Farmer’s Market or grocery store. Then add the flowers to a vase for easy Kentucky Derby decor.

You can also make a pretty rose garland to drape over a bar cart too.

Mini Horse Shoes

Add mini metal horse shoes around the bar for a super simple and charming Derby-inspired idea. We purchased them here and they’re perfect for crafts, garland or to just place on a table.

Shop Antique Stores

Antique stores are a great option to find golden silver vases and decorative items. They usually carry inexpensive brass and silver vases and trays that you can use for the party.

We found a charming vase which resembles a trophy and filled it with roses. It’s perfect for a Kentucky Derby party.

Cocktail Picks

Cocktail picks are a great way to add charm to a cocktail. It’s all about the details! We found these adorable horse picks and they were perfect for our gold-themed Derby party.

Place the bourbon, cocktail pick and straw in the cup with fresh-cut flowers or a large bow tied around the cup.
