It doesn’t get easier than a classic, three-ingredient daiquiri recipe. No more sweet slushies, this recipe is made the way a daiquiri should be. It’s simple and refreshing!

Somehow over the years, the daiquiri was fully taken from its true form and made into an overly sweet, frozen cocktail.

One you can buy in an extra-long plastic cup with a giant straw. Don’t get me wrong, we definitely had fun at the daiquiri bars in New Orleans… so many flavors to choose from!

But if I’m going to serve a daiquiri at my house, I’m making them with simple ingredients and ones served in a coupe. This is our favorite recipe for a classic daiquiri.

Ingredients in a Classic Daiquiri

  1. Lime juice
  2. Light rum
  3. Homemade simple syrup using organic cane sugar

This cocktail should be a perfect balance of sweet and sour. Choose a light rum or light golden rum that’s not overly sweet. Futhermore, use fresh-squeezed lime juice and make sure to use brown cane sugar to make the simple syrup.

How to Make a Classic Daiquiri

  • First, prepare the simple syrup. Add 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup cane sugar in a saucepan and simmer until sugar is melted. Let it cool to room temperature. You can store it in the refrigerator for one week.
  • Add the fresh lime juice, simple syrup and rum to a cocktail shaker.
  • Fill the shaker with ice (leaving room to shake).
  • Shake for 30 seconds, then strain over a coupe glasses.
  • Add a lime slice to garnish and a sugared rim if you prefer.

Quick tip – One of the most important steps when making a daiquiri is shaking the ingredients with ice. Shake hard with ice for at least 30 seconds. As a result, the cocktail is diluted and cold. It’s crucial for taste.

We like to give the coupe a sugared rim because it looks so pretty. This is totally optional and you might not like the extra sweetness the sugar adds to the rim.

A Little Daiquiri History

The Daiquiri was supposedly invented by an American mining engineer who was in Cuba around 1890. It was introduced to the New York City bar scene around 1902-1908 and eventually was the favorite drink of Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy.

It was originally served in a tall glass with crushed ice and the cocktail is one of six basic drinks listed in  David A. Embury’s classic The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.

Daiquiri Recipe Variations

As we all know, flavored daiquiris are very popular. There are variations you can make without going overboard on the sweetness.

Hemingway Daiquiri – Has a little added Grapefruit juice, Maraschino liqueur.

Frozen Daiquiri  – Add ice to this recipe and blend for a frozen daiquiri.

Banana Daiquiri – Add a little banana liqueur in the mix. If you want to do a frozen one, you can use this recipe, add in 1 banana and ice and blend.
