The rose has been treasured for centuries – not just for its beauty, but for its healing benefits too. While we love using it in a rose water gin cocktail, making rose water at home is surprisingly easy (especially if you have fresh roses in your garden!).

There are two methods: the hydrosol method produces clear rose water by capturing condensation in a bowl, but it’s more work and yields less. I prefer the simpler way – just simmering petals with water. It’s quick, easy, and just as lovely!

Rose Water Supplies

Fresh Rose Petals: Use fragrant, pesticide-free petals – organic is best for beauty or edible uses

Distilled Water: Ensures your rose water stays fresh longer and free of impurities

Large Pot: A heavy-bottomed pot is perfect for gently simmering the petals

Strainer: Helps remove the petals after steeping, leaving you with a smooth, petal-free water.

Funnel and Bottle: Makes pouring easy and mess-free; store it in a clean, glass bottle with a lid to keep it fresh and fragrant

This method is much easier and good for food recipes or cocktails. It has a shorter shelf life but is a quick way to make potent rose water.

How to Make Rose Water

Add 3-4 cups of fresh rose petals to a pot and pour distilled water over them until they’re covered by about an inch.

Bring the water to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 25 minutes.

Strain the mixture into a bowl, discarding the petals.

Use a funnel to transfer the water into a clean bottle with a lid for storing.

Rose Water Tips

Use organic roses: Make sure your petals are pesticide-free, especially if you’re using the rose water in drinks, food, or on your skin.

Pick petals at their peak: Fresh, fragrant petals (not wilted ones) will give you the best scent and color.

Use distilled water: It’s free of minerals and impurities, helping your rose water last longer.

Store it in a glass bottle: Preferably dark glass to preserve the fragrance and keep it fresh.

Refrigerate for longer shelf life: Homemade rose water will stay fresh for up to a week in the fridge
