Frequently Asked Questions

Why Do My Bisquick Biscuits Fall Apart?

One of the main issues people have with Bisquick biscuits is that they crumble and fall apart. To avoid that:

Use enough Bisquick.

Don’t use too much liquid.

Knead them firmly.

Don’t let your dough stand too long before baking.

Can You Use Water Instead of Milk in Bisquick?

Yes! You can use water instead of milk in Bisquick to make biscuits vegan and dairy-free. Substitute as much water as milk is called for by the recipe. Add other ingredients as instructed.ย

Using water may change the coloring, texture, and taste.

What Are the Four Types of Biscuits?

There are basically four types of what Americans consider biscuits:

Rolled Biscuits. These are the flaky, fluffy, layered breakfast treats most of us are familiar with.

Drop Biscuits.ย No rolling is required here! Because the dough is much wetter (like a batter), simply drop these on a baking sheet with a spoon.

Scones. Though they’re not biscuits in the traditional sense, scones are a biscuit’s classy cousin. They’re made with cream and butter. This makes them heavier and a bit crustier.

Shortcakes.ย Like scones, shortcake biscuits are often sweeter than traditional biscuits. They’re dense, delicious, and served with fresh fruit or whipped cream.

Is Bisquick the Same as Biscuit Mix?

Bisquick is a name-brand biscuit mix. It has all of the ingredients as other brands and from-scratch biscuit mixes.

How Do I Make Soft Biscuits?

Make sure all butter, milk, cream, and buttermilk is very cold when mixing into the dough. Cold fats make softer biscuits.

Don’t overwork the dough. Constant re-rolling develops the gluten in the dough and makes it elastic and hard. To correct this, wrap the dough in clingfilm and place it in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

What Are American Biscuits?

An American biscuit is a type of quick bread. Instead of using yeast, quick breads are leavened with baking soda or powder. This not only cuts down on baking time, it also makes the texture a bit bubblier.

Traditionally, American biscuits are a savory breakfast food. They’re often enjoyed with butter, jam, jelly, meat, cheese or even white gravy!

How Do You Make Biscuits?

In general, biscuits are made in seven steps:

Mix dry ingredients like flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.

Next, cut in fats like butter, lard, or shortening. You can do this with a fork or pastry cutter. The end result should resemble a coarse meal.

With a spatula, mix in wet ingredients until just combined. Don’t overwork it. The dough should be wet and sticky.

Roll out the dough until it’s about an inch thick.

Fold or knead the dough on a floured counter. Fold in half, pat down, and repeat. In the end, press the dough down to about an inch thick.

Cut out biscuit shapes with a round cutter.

Bake then serve!

Should You Sift Bisquick?

Bisquick has fat in it, so never sift it. This removes important biscuit ingredients from it and trust us โ€” cleaning a fat-clogged sifter is no fun.

What to Serve with Biscuit S’mores

Since these are sweet, it’s best to serve them with a savory dish such as:
