The other night, Zan and I were craving a cocktail and my fridge was running on empty. I usually always keep lemons and limes on hand to whip something up quickly, but this time I only had grapefruit and peaches and nothing else!

I immediately thought of a Salty Dog cocktail, which is grapefruit juice and gin, but the peaches looked so good, so I tossed them in the mix too!

This Peachy Grapefruit Salty Dog is just as simple. Cut the peach into smaller pieces and discard the seed.

In a cocktail shaker, muddle 1 ripe peach and add in the grapefruit juice, gin and ice. Shake for at least 20 seconds, then strain into a salt-rimmed glass filled with ice.

I love how light and refreshing Salty Dogs are and that they don’t have added sugar. They’re perfect for a warm fall afternoon!

If you’re looking for a good gin, I really love Gray Whale. It’s light, smooth and has notes of Baja and citrus and subtle coastal fir trees.

It’s distilled an bottled by a family-owned business in Sebastopol and they support Oceana.

Origins Of The Salty Dog Cocktail

The Salty Dog is an easy summer cocktail.  It is a classic grapefruit-flavored cocktail believed to have been created around 1950 by the same mixologist who invented the well-known Bloody Mary.

Originally made with gin, vodka is a popular substitute.  As with many drinks, using fresh grapefruit turns this from a good drink to an awesome cocktail.  The salted rim–which converts the drink from being a Greyhound into a Salty Dog–helps contrast the slight bitterness of the citrus.

Top Tips For A Salty Dog Cocktail

  • If possible, use freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, for the best flavor.
  • If you do not have a muddler, you can use a wooden spoon.
  • Shake the cocktail mixer until it feels cold, at least 20 seconds.
  • Use coarse salt for rimming the glass.
