Cucumber Margarita Ingredient Notes

This cocktail is made with fresh ingredients you can find at your local grocery store.

Cucumbers – Use cucumbers that are ripe and fragrant. Slice them small enough so that when muddled they let out fresh cucumber juice. You can use an English cucumber to make this drink too.

Tequila – You can use any tequila you like, such as silver tequila, reposado or anejo.

Lime Juice – Fresh lime juice is always when making cocktails.

Simple Syrup – This helps to sweeten the cocktail and balance out the tartness from the lime juice. You can easily make your own simple syrup, just follow our simple syrup guide.

Grand Marnier – This adds a nice hint of orange flavor which helps to balance out the cucumber and tequila. You can use any orange liqueur for this drink.

How to Make a Cucumber Margarita

Garnish with a cucumber slice, lime wedge, and fresh mint.

Muddle fresh cucumber and lime juice in a cocktail shaker until the cucumber breaks down and releases juice.

Add tequila, orange liqueur, and simple syrup, then fill the shaker with ice.

Shake for 30 seconds until chilled.

Rim a glass with salt (or Tajín), fill it with ice, and strain the cocktail into the glass.

Recipe Tips

Use fresh, crisp cucumbers – The flavor starts here! Avoid soft or mushy ones—go for firm, fragrant cucumbers for the best-tasting cocktail.

Fresh lime juice is a must – Trust me, bottled lime juice just won’t cut it. Fresh-squeezed makes all the difference.

Salt the rim – A salted (or Tajín!) rim gives the perfect contrast to the cool cucumber flavor. It’s simple but makes it feel like a real cocktail moment.

Shake it like you mean it – Don’t skip the shake! A solid 20 to 30 seconds mixes everything together and chills it to perfection.

Make it your own – Add jalapeño for a spicy twist, muddled mint for freshness, or try cucumber-infused tequila for extra flavor. No cocktail strainer? A fine mesh sieve works great!

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you use instead of tequila in a margarita?

It’s not considered a margarita if you don’t use tequila. However, if you don’t want to use tequila in this drink, you can substitute it with vodka or gin.

Can cucumber margaritas be made ahead of time?

Yes, cucumber margaritas can be made ahead of time. Just store the pre-made cucumber margaritas in a sealed container in your refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, shake the cocktail shaker with ice and fill the glasses with the chilled cucumber margaritas.

Is triple sec or Cointreau better for margaritas?

Both triple sec and Cointreau are liqueurs made with orange flavors that are commonly used in margaritas. Cointreau gives the cocktail a more balanced orange flavor, but triple sec is less expensive. Use whichever one you prefer!
