How to Make a Caviar Appetizer and Platter

One thing that you need to know about creating a caviar platter is to keep it simple. Let the caviar be the star and don’t overload it with too many accompaniments. Simplicity is key! Here’s what you need:

Supplies

  • Small Bowls – These are used for the dips and chopped ingredients.
  • Two Small Bowls Raised – If you have two bowls that are higher, these are good for the tins of caviar to sit.
  • Mother of Pearl Spoon – This is used to serve the caviar. These are used as the spoon does not hold or transfer any flavor to the caviar.

What Goes on A Caviar Platter

Caviar – There are several brands, variates, and grades of caviar you can serve. Find one within your budget that has good ratings and can be shipped overnight.

Toasted Baguette – Slice and toast a baguette with butter or olive oil.

Potatoes Chips – There is no better pairing than caviar and thick-cut potato chip!

Blini – Blinis are soft, small pancakes usually made with buckwheat flour. Caviar is traditionally served on these soft pancakes. If you want to make these too you can. However, potato chips and a toasty baguette are our top choice.

Crème Fraîche – A classic caviar accompaniment, it’s creamy and adds a nice balance.

Sour Cream Dip РThis adds so much flavor when making a caviar canap̩.

Red Onion – Thinly sliced or diced red onion adds a nice flavor to the caviar platter.

Fresh Chives – If you want to add a little more color and flavor, thinly slice some green onions and add them to the platter.

Herbs – Add some herbs like fresh dill, parsley, or oregano to the platter for a pretty presentation. These can also be used when building the canapé too.

How to Make the Perfect Caviar Canapés

The best way is to take a chip, toasted baguette, or blini, add a dollop of sour cream or creme fraiche, and sprinkle a little chopped red onion or sliced green onions over the top. Then add a dollop of caviar on top.

Tips for Serving Caviar

Always serve caviar in its original container on ice to keep it cold while guests create their caviar appetizer.

Use a Mother of pearl spoon when serving caviar – metal spoons will alter the caviar’s flavor. If you don’t have this type of spoon, you can use any other spoon that is not metal.

Caviar will last about 2 hours at room temperature. It’s imperative to leave it in the refrigerator until serving.

Place the caviar on ice 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Once the container is opened, store it in the refrigerator and you have 48 hours to consume it.

Let the eggs shine! Remember to keep it simple, you’ve splurged on buying a delicacy so don’t cover it up with other ingredients.

Popular Types of Caviar

Caviar is a very personal choice. It depends on your budget, the type of caviar you prefer, and what you plan to pair it with. Here are some caviar varietals you can choose from:

  • Beluga Caviar – This is the most expensive caviar and is associated with luxury. Its large, glossy black pearls identify it.
  • Osetra Caviar – Also known as fine caviar, this is obtained from the Ossetra sturgeon. It has a creamy, nutty flavor.
  • White Sturgeon Caviar – An American origin Caviar, this one has a smooth, nutty flavor.
  • Sevruga Caviar – This caviar is much less expensive than Beluga caviar and has smaller, gray pearls.

Where to Buy Caviar

You can find caviar online or at your local gourmet store. Make sure you buy caviar that’s fresh, sustainably harvested, and high in quality.

You don’t want to skimp on caviar, so it’s important to buy from a reputable source. Here are a few places you can buy Caviar online:

  • Roe Caviar – American white sturgeon caviar that is sustainably farmed in Northern California.
  • Regiis Ova – This brand of caviar was founded by Chef Thomas Keller. They source from the finest caviar farms around the world.
  • Petrossian – They have mastered the art of caviar and sell all different types. You can’t go wrong with Petrossian.

How to Store Caviar

If the caviar is unopened and properly stored in an airtight container in a cold refrigerator, it can last up to four weeks. The refrigerator temperature should be anywhere from 28 to 32 degrees.

Store the caviar immediately in the refrigerator once it’s delivered.

Drinks to Serve with Caviar

The best drinks to serve with caviar are Champagne, sparkling wine, white wine, or vodka drinks. These two beverages bring out the flavor of caviar.
