Hugo spritz recipe with lemon slice and fresh mint.

Summer is the season for sipping refreshing cocktails and soaking up the sun. And what better way to do that than with a taste of Italy in your glass? The Hugo Spritz (St-Germain spritz) is the ultimate summer cocktail that will transport you straight to the streets of Italy.

If you’ve ever visited Italy during the summer, chances are you’ve seen this drink on every menu. It was the drink of summer when we visited this summer, and I loved it! It’s typically served as an Aperitivo – a pre-dinner drink meant to stimulate the appetite.

A Hugo spritz is versatile and made with just a few simple ingredients. You can adjust the recipe to your liking by adding more or less St-Germain or lemon juice, depending on how sweet you want it. I love the floral notes paired with mint and Prosecco. It’s my new favorite cocktail!

Hugo Spritz Ingredients

St-Germain: This elderflower cordial adds a sweet, floral note to your Hugo Spritz.

Prosecco: An Italian sparkling wine with a light, bubbly texture and a touch of sweetness. It is an essential ingredient, so use a good-quality Prosecco.

Soda Water: Helps to balance the sweetness and adds a refreshing fizz.

Fresh Mint Leaves: Provides a vibrant, cooling aroma and taste; gently muddle or spank the leaves to release their oils.

Lemon: Adds a splash of tartness to balance the flavors and can be used as a wheel garnish.

Ice: Essential for chilling and diluting the drink to the perfect level.

Tips for Making a Hugo Spritz Cocktail

  • Use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Prosecco also adds sweetness to this drink, so it’s important to use a good brand.
  • Muddle mint in the glass for extra mint flavor.
  • Add a splash of lemon juice for a more tart flavor.
  • Serve in a large wine glass filled with ice cubes.
  • Garnish with a lemon wheel and a sprig of mint for an extra touch of freshness.
  • For presentation, try dusting your glass with powdered sugar before adding in the ingredients.

How to Prepare Mint

When it comes to garnishing with mint, you can use a few different techniques. One method is gently pressing the mint leaves between your fingers to release their oils and aroma.

Another option is to give them a light “spank” on the back of your hand – this helps to bruise the leaves and bring out more flavor.

Or, for a more decorative touch, you can create a “mint sprig bouquet” by tying together several small stems of mint with kitchen twine or a thin strip of lime peel.
