Piña Colada History

The earliest story of how the pina colada came to be is from the 19th century when a Puerto Rican pirate, Roberto Cofresí, concocted a cocktail that contained coconut, pineapple, and white rum to give to his crew.

This would eventually become the Pina Colada by Puerto Rico, by bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, who recreated it at the Caribe Hilton in 1954 in San Juan.

How to Make a Virgin Pina Colada

This is a very simple drink to make! You’ll need a blender to make this frozen drink.

Ingredients To Make a Virgin Piña Colada

Frozen Pineapple – Buy any frozen pineapple at the store or chop a fresh one and freeze the pineapple chunks.

Pineapple Juice – Use 100% pineapple juice, no sugar added.

Orange Juice – Fresh squeezed or pure orange juice.

Cream of Coconut – We use this for all of our pina colada recipes. It’s sweet and made with pressed coconut meat, milk, and oil. It’s also easy to squeeze and use!

Tips and Recipe Variatons for Making a Virgin Piña Colada

Always taste test! After the recipe is blended, take a spoon and taste it. See if it needs more of anything and then continue to blend.

Use coconut milk instead of cream of coconut.

If you have fresh pineapple, you can use that with 1 cup of ice.

Rinse the blender immediately for easy cleanup.

If you still want the taste of rum, add in 1 1/2 teaspoons of rum extract! Zero alcohol but adds hints of warm vanilla rum.

If you want a thick texture drink, add more frozen pineapple or ice. If you like a more liquid texture, add more pineapple juice.

Frozen or Fresh Pineapple

For a frozen pina colada recipe, always use frozen pineapple. This way, you don’t have to add ice to the recipe to give it a slushy texture. Ice will dilute the ingredients and the alcohol too much and cause it to have an icy texture.

Frozen pineapple gives the cocktail a pineapple flavor and creates the perfect frozen texture without watering down the drink.

Cocktail Umbrellas

Drinking umbrellas add charm to all tropical cocktails and gives the drink a festive presentation. Here are some of our favorite places to buy drink umbrellas:
