I’m a California girl through and through—Mexican food and margaritas are basically a love language around here! This skinny margarita is my go-to and here’s why I’m obsessed:

Light, crisp, and easy—perfect for taco nights, pool hangs, or Cinco de Mayo.

Naturally sweetened with agave—no refined sugar!

Fresh citrus flavor from real lime and orange juice.

Skinny Margarita Ingredient Notes

This recipe uses simple, fresh ingredients you can grab at any grocery store:

Agave: A natural sweetener that balances the citrus. You can also use honey or monk fruit if you prefer!

Tequila: Use a high-quality tequila, since there’s no orange liqueur to mask the flavor. A smooth blanco tequila works beautifully here.

Lime Juice: Always fresh-squeezed! It gives the drink that perfect tart kick.

Orange Juice: Fresh orange juice replaces orange liqueur for a citrusy twist that blends beautifully with lime.

How to Make a Skinny Margarita

  • Add tequila, fresh lime juice, orange juice, and agave to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake well for 30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute for a perfectly balanced flavor.
  • Strain into a glass filled with ice, garnish with a lime wedge, and enjoy!

Recipe Tips & Variations

Make a pitcher: For a crowd, mix 18 oz tequila, 24 oz lime juice, 12 oz orange juice, and 3 oz agave with 6 cups of ice. Stir and garnish with fresh lime slices!

Muddle fresh fruit: Try blackberries, strawberries, mango, or pineapple for a fruity twist.

Spice it up: Add a small slice of muddled jalapeño or chili-salt the rim for extra kick.

Add bubbles: Top with lemon or ginger kombucha for fizz and a probiotic boost.

Serve mini margs: Pour into mini glasses with cute garnishes for parties, such a charming touch!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a skinny margarita and a regular margarita?

Regular margaritas often use mixers or triple sec with added sugar. A skinny margarita uses natural sweeteners (like agave), fresh citrus juice, and no refined sugar, giving it a lighter, fresher taste.

What is a skinny margarita drink?

A skinny margarita is a lighter version of a classic margarita. It’s made with fresh lime and orange juice, a natural sweetener like agave or Truvia Nectar, and skips the sugary syrups and orange liqueurs. It’s lower in sugar, calories, and carbs—and still super refreshing!

How many carbs are in a skinny margarita?

It depends on your sweetener and citrus. Tequila has zero carbs.
1 tsp agave: ~5g carbs
1 lime: ~5g carbs
1 orange: ~8g carbs
Using Truvia Nectar lowers the carb count even more.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake hard for 30 seconds. This is an important part as the ice helps to dilute the cocktail giving it a balanced taste.
  • Strain over a glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!

Notes

Always taste test, add more lime juice, and make it how you like! Add more sweetener if you need.

How to Make a Salt Rim

A salted rim is a must for this margarita! It’s what gives it that delicious margarita flavor.
To make a salted rim, run a lime wedge around the edge of your glass. Then, dip the rim into a plate of coarse salt or pink salt. We used pink salt on our sparkling margarita, and it looks beautiful.
